Honeycrisp was developed by the University of Minnesota Apple Breeding Program in the 1960’s, but was not released commercially until 1991. Until 2004, Honeycrisp was believed to be a cross between Macoun and Honeygold, however genetic fingerprinting determined neither are parents of Honeycrisp. Keepsake, another variety developed by the University of Minnesota is one of the parents, the other parent has not been determined. Honeycrisp is a wonderfully crisp and flavorful apple which is sweet and tangy, and excellent for snacking, salads and applesauce. |
