Discovered as a chance seedling in West Virginia in 1890, its parents are thought to be Golden Reinette and Grimes Golden. Golden Delicious was originally named Mullin’s Yellow Seedling, until Stark Brothers of Louisiana, Missouri bought propagation rights to the variety in 1916, and renamed it as a companion to their Red Delicious. Golden Delicious is a sweet apple which is great fresh, and requires less added sugar in cooking uses such as applesauce, pies and other baked goods.
